During my long career in the furniture business I’ve often been asked, “What is the proper way to care for my fabric?” After all, you’ve purchased your dream furniture piece but you’re terrified to use it out of fear of damaging it. But you don’t have to live in fear! After extensive research and testing I have found the following guidelines and suggestions to be helpful.

Upholstered Furniture
Because of the wide variety of fabrics and fiber combinations, there is no guarantee that these methods will be completely successful and I recommend that a professional upholstery cleaner be contacted in particular cases. However, these simple solutions will keep your new upholstery crisp and clean for years!

•Vacuum at least once a week to remove grit that can cause abrasion, and be sure to dust vacuum the top surfaces as often as possible. Professional cleaning is the best way to make a slightly soiled sofa look new again, but weekly vacuuming will make professional cleaning a less frequent event. (Never brush any fabric with a stiff fiber or metal brush, since they’re destructive to the fibers. Instead, use your vacuum attachments like the upholstery brush or the attachment for dusting draperies and furniture. The latter brush has longer bristles and is less abrasive to your upholstery fabric. It may be your best option if your fabric deserves a softer brushing.)

•Reverse the cushions each week after vacuuming. Rearrange the furniture occasionally to ensure even wear of the cushions and other areas.
Cushions and pillows filled with down or similar cushioning material should be hand-fluffed and reversed regularly to retain their original softness and resiliency.

•Protect fabrics from the sun. Fabrics should not be placed in direct sunlight because the ultraviolet light will cause the fibers to degenerate and colors to fade. Occasionally dyes can fade from impurities in the air as well, but protection from the sun is a good way to prevent premature loss of color.

•Keep pets off the furniture. Pet urine and pet body oil can be difficult to remove.

•Use proper care with structural weave fabrics (where the design is created by the weave) to protect against snags. These fabrics may be cleaned by sprinkling dry powder cleaner over the fabric, spreading it uniformly and letting it stand for the recommended period before vacuuming with gentle suction. (However, I do recommend professional cleaning with stains on a woven fabric.)

•Caution those wearing clothing with transferable dyes, such as blue jeans, that the dye could transfer onto light-colored furniture.

Fabric Cleaning Guide
Today’s new fabric treatments improve the chances of your fabric’s survival. Fabric protection products are usually applied by the retail store for an additional cost. Most of the various brands work the same way by causing spills and soil to sit on the surface of the fiber instead of migrating to the fiber’s interior.

Today’s fiber protection products are free of ozone damaging chemicals, and most are hypoallergenic and invisible to the eye. Some even provide additional UV protection from color fading caused by intense light. One of the greatest benefits of fabric protection products is that they come with specific written warranties that provide peace of mind.

Whether your new upholstery has been fabric protected or not, you should follow the same basic guidelines in cleaning liquid spills or surface soil that can’t be brushed off (such as newspaper ink).

Fabric Cleaning Codes
Before attempting to clean a spill or spot on your furniture, you should identify the fabric and the correct cleaning method recommended by the manufacturer. This information is represented by a cleaning code (W, S, WS, or X) often found under a cushion, on the bottom of the furniture or on the manufacturer’s tag. If you cannot find this information, contact your salesperson at the furniture store where the item was purchased.

W – Spot clean only with water-based shampoo or foam upholstery cleaner.

S – Spot clean only with water-free cleaning solvent. Do not overwet. DO NOT USE WATER.

WS – Spot clean with upholstery shampoo, foam from a mild detergent, or a mild dry cleaning solvent. Do not overwet.

X – Clean only by vacuuming or light brushing with a non-metallic brush. DO NOT USE WATER OR DRY CLEANING SOLVENTS. Do not use a foam or liquid cleaner of any type.

Never apply cleaning solutions to visible areas of your upholstery fabric without first testing on areas that are not visible. It is important to pretest for color loss and fabric compatibility.

Cleaning Instructions
As a general rule, when a spill occurs, it is important to clean the fabric immediately. The longer a spot remains, the harder it is to remove. It may even become permanent.

Blot, don’t rub. If the spill is still “fresh”, use a clean, dry and very absorbent 100% cotton cloth. Should you have to use paper towels to blot out spills, be sure the paper towel (or cloth) is white, as colors in the towel may, when applied to a wet surface, fade onto the upholstery. Color from one fabric can rub off onto another fabric, even when dry — a process known in the industry as “crocking”.

If blotting with a dry cloth doesn’t quite finish the job and you have cleaning directions from the furniture manufacturer, follow those. If none are available, use the instructions provided here.

I hope this information has been insightful. Use these tools when necessary, but most importantly, enjoy your upholstered piece — it was meant to be used!

A Great Gift for Any Special Girl in Your Life
Book Review – How to Help Your Hurting Friend by Susie Shellenberger
Reviewed by Lisa M. Hendey

How to Help Your Hurting Friend (Zondervan, February 2004, paperback, 176 pages) is the type of book I wish someone would have given me when I turned thirteen. Granted, life during my teenage years was much less complicated than what today’s teens face – but some of the basic issues confronted by a young lady never change. Susie Shellenberger has written a wonderful book that should be on the top of each caring mom’s (or aunt’s or grandmother’s…) list of books to share with her daughter.

Written in an upbeat, conversational tone, How to Help Your Hurting Friend doesn’t make any assumptions. It rightly starts with a section on making friends and walks the young reader through the steps to being a great girlfriend. Rightly, this section of the book culminates with Shellenberger’s advice to “Be Jesus to those around you.” This is great advice for any of us! Shellenberger’s wisdom seems to point towards relationships made better by fostering a giving and loving spirit, rather than what a person will take out of a relationship.

The meat of How to Help Your Hurting Friend is Section Two, which walks the reader through various scenarios that tragically, but realistically, come up frequently in today’s society. Eating disorders, depression, internet addictions, illness, self destructive behaviors and sexual abuse are each given detailed treatment by the author. The list of “do” and “don’t” suggestions at the end of each of the units provides teens with a good, proactive list of steps they can take to help a friend in need.

The third section of the book contains several letters to Susie, complete with her helpful responses covering a myriad of situations. Also included are some helpful questions, prompts and inspiring articles.

Overall, I believe that How to Help Your Hurting Friend is a great resource for any teen or young adult, although the book will have strong appeal for young women. I plan to read several of the sections of the book with my thirteen year old son. I have to say I gained quite a lot from reading the book myself. If you learn nothing else from How to Help Your Hurting Friend, the one point of wisdom “Be Jesus to those around you” is worth the cover price.

Did you know that even in the spring, food is still scarce for birds. Bird-feeding is a great family activity. It helps the birds too!
Did you know that even in spring, food is still scarce for birds? It’s too cool yet for many insect populations, and there won’t be any fruit on trees until harvest time.

Feeding birds in the winter is a great family activity. It helps the birds too!

FIRST DO SOME STUDYING & READING

Check out the bird photo library here.

Learn about the different birds! GardenArtisans offers a 64-page color flip book called “Early Bird: Common Backyard Birds,” with pictures of birds and migratory maps. You can learn to identify and attract birds to your yard. Also contains drawings and measurements for building birdhouses to suit specific birds. Only $5.95.

Download free kids kit “Learn about Backyard Birds”.

And go here to learn bird songs and calls.

WHAT TO FEED THE BIRDS?

There are tons of products available for feeding birds. In most locations, however, the best bet for attracting birds is black-oil sunflower seed. It’s got a high meat-to-shell ratio, it’s high in fat, and it’s small size and thin shell make it easy for small birds to handle and crack. (The striped version is larger and has a harder shell.)

You’ll want to attract smaller birds, because larger birds like starlings, doves and grackles can cause quite a mess and are very noisy as well.

Never feed birds spoiled leftovers, salty snack foods or sugary cereals. Also NEVER chocolate. Chocolate contains an ingredient called theobromine, which is toxic to birds as well as dogs and cats.

Only use peanut butter if you mix it with seed. Alone, it can choke birds.

Different feed attracts different birds. Here’s a chart that will tell you about this.

Here are some suet recipes.

FEEDERS

Place your feeders where you can see them, but also where the birds can get away quickly in case of predators – like the family cat.

Consider what’s UNDER the feeder, because it’s going to get bird poop on it.

Vary the heights of your feeders for fun watching.

Wash your feeders at least twice a year. Cornell U. recommends using a solution of 10% bleach and wearing gloves and a mask.

WATER

Birds also need water so if you put it out, they’ll come. According to Cornell U., birds prefer water at ground level (you can just use a dish or shallow pan), but if there’s a cat-danger, raise it 2-3′ above ground.

Put sand in the bottom to help the birds get their footing

Change the water every couple of days to keep it fresh

Put some branches or stones in there so the birds can stand on them and drink without getting wet. This is important in the winter.

MAKE YOUR OWN FEEDERS

Bird feeders don’t need to be purchased, expensive or elaborate.

Here are some great homemade feeder specs including these two:

Punch holes on either side of a plastic pop bottle, stick a twig all the way through with its ends sticking out for perches and poking more holes nearby for the birds to pull the seeds out. Then hang the bottle by tying a string around its neck. (Finches really like these!)

Coat a pine cone with peanut butter, roll it in birdseed, and hang it from a tree branch.

You can also order a birdhouse kit here that you can make with your children.

EXTEND THE LEARNING PROJECT

Take photographs of the birds and make a scrapbook about this family activity.

Your children can also submit their own stories, articles, activities, poems and artwork about birds here.

Algebra is one of the most profound and major arms of mathematics. Although at first it may appear to just fly over your head, exercise helps in making understanding things a lot better. Students will have to learn this for many levels, thus it is essential to create a sound base from the start.

The Difficult Areas

Algebra includes many areas of study, graphing curves being one of them. This could include graphing a circle, graphing systems of non-linear inequalities, graphing inequalities or graphing quadratic equations . Exponents is one of the important areas of study. This can range from subtracting exponents, dividing exponents or just applying the laws of exponents. Rationalizing, factorizing, matrices, hyperbolas and quadratics all have to do with algebra.

Some pupils find algebra rather tough. Still, in today’s day and age that is not a trouble as nearly each pupil is capable of accessing and using a computer. One can easily use online math programs that instruct and test students. For practicing and enhancing skills, there are worksheets available in these software. Online tutors are also available and are easy to contact. The charges can be based on number of hours or per module and this works as if the pupil and the tutor were face to face.

Getting Help with Algebra

There are a large number of software programs that can help pupils. These computer programs provide gradual guides to help students through their troubles. These software packages can help you with your homework, test preparation and even exam readiness! As algebra has a wide number of sub-sections you can pick out software packages that link to your particular difficulty or problem. This could be basic algebra, algebra 1, algebra 2 or just graphs. Some software systems also include games and videos that could further develop your algebraic skills.

Algebra calculators are also available over the Net. They can help solve many types of algebraic questions. Mostly these will include questions that have to do with fractional equations or complex inequalities. Various types of calculators help pupils to stress on different fields of algebra.

Though these computer software packages and other aids can help many pupils master a great number of problems, it is important that they are used for the proper intention. Using these facilities and cheating would only be a loss to yourself. It is better to use them to check the answers of your homework assignments rather than using them to complete your homework.

Looking at your belly you probably might have felt that the real enemy is the fat. Nope, there are two kinds of fats, the unsaturated fats and the saturated .
It’s the saturated fat that is the real enemy and that we don’t want.

We do not want the unwanted fat but we keep eating it.
Want a definition of insanity, Keep doing the same things and you keep getting the same results.

Instead of blaming the fats, the food lets look at our eating habits.
A great body does not come with that new book, that new training program and they will not teach you anything new. You know it all. You know that you got to diet and exercise and have a calorie cut down especially fats to look and feel the way we do. That’s what that lucratively pitched sales letter of that new book or training program tells us. They say finally the 100% guaranteed method and all that. But we should remember that the simple formula of health and fitness success.
Its this–Diet and exercise not for a day or week but week after week consistently is the only way to achieve that great and fit body. Period. Case closed.

Lowering your fat consumption is the way to go not only for the look of it but also for the health of it.

Fats do a lot of things in our body, which we cannot without fats.
Most importantly of all fats provide energy. When body runs out of carbohydrates it turns to fat for energy.

There are different types of fats.
Triglycerides, Phospholipids and cholesterol, which may be further, low density {LDL}
Or High density {HDL}.

The recommended guidelines is that the total fat intake should not exceed 25% and make sure most of it comes from poly unsaturated fatty acids.

That’s the way to go.

Hawaii is the dream trip for many Americans, but it can be daunting to book a trip to Hawaii because it’s so very expensive. Unless you’re flying from the West Coast, plane tickets are more expensive than most foreign countries, and the length of the flight is prohibitive as well. However, a trip to Hawaii can be the adventure of a lifetime, so consider forgoing other less exciting trips over the course of a year or two and saving up for a grand adventure in Hawaii.

Hotels in Hawaii are generally oceanfront and offer a resort atmosphere. If you want to spend your vacation on some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, you’ll be more than delighted here. However, you can also enjoy active sports, lots of impressive indigenous wildlife, more sedate attractions like golf and shopping, and some very interesting native culture. Of course, if you’re a surfer, Hawaii represents the holy grail and must be visited at some point in your life!

Cheap airline tickets to Hawaii are not readily available, unfortunately. If you’re a frequent flyer, saving up for airline tickets to Hawaii is highly recommended, because you can end up saving thousands of dollars over time.

Eating out in Hawaii is expensive, so you may want to consider purchasing an all-inclusive vacation that includes meals, or staying in a resort that has efficiency apartments (like a hotel room but with a tiny kitchen) and eating some meals in if you need to save money. Another alternative that is a great way to experience local culture is to shop at local farmers’ markets. You’ll get fresh produce and local specialties in season, and get to meet residents and see a part of the islands that most tourists are not familiar with.

Hawaii is truly one of the most beautiful places in the world, so don’t let money get in the way of seeing this paradise on earth. Start planning now and a Hawaii trip truly is within reach!

Would you like to enhance the quality of your life and increase your personal happiness? If you answered “yes,” the information in this article could change your life!

Isn’t it easy to get stuck in the everydayness of life? We can get so busy making a living and getting ahead financially that the really important things fall through the cracks!

That can happen to all of us. However, when people come to the end of their lives, they don’t wish they had spent more time making money. When all is said and done, we want our family and friends to be with us then!

So let’s try to focus on developing better relationships instead of acquiring more things. Think of your circle of family and friends as a lovely garden to water and cultivate. The book of Proverbs teaches this crucial truth: “A man that has friends must show himself friendly” (Proverbs 18:24).

Here are 7 keys that will help your relationships to bloom:

1. Spend time with your friends and loved ones.

Although this is obvious, we need to intentionally set aside time in our schedules for them no matter how busy we think we are. Put appointments with friends and family into your daytimer or palm pilot. If you don’t do this, you may forget and months and even years can go by without seeing these special people. The sad fact is that those relationships can dry up and wither away from neglect.

Many marriages fail for just this reason. People are often too busy to spend enough time with each other and one or both of the partners can’t take the neglect. If you want your relationships to bloom, you have to water them with quality time. How long would a rose garden be lush and beautiful if no one watered it for days without end?

2. Genuinely appreciate the special people in your life.

Tell them how much they mean to you. Mention their good qualities and how special they are. For example, if you need to correct your children’s behavior, be sure to spend twice as much time appreciating their positive qualities than reprimanding their negative ones.

3. Learn to say, “I was wrong. Please forgive me.”

This will do wonders for your relationships. Humility is a beautiful quality in any person. Someone who thinks he or she is always right can be impossible to live with. If your habitual attitute is “I’m ALWAYS right,” that’s a poisonous plant that will spread and ruin your entire garden. Apologizing and asking for forgiveness when we’ve done something wrong does not degrade us. Instead it shows that we are growing up.

4. Be quick to forgive and don’t hold grudges.

Bury the past. Bitterness never helped anyone. It only hurts the bitter person. Don’t let the agressive weeds of unforgiveness spoil your garden. Try not to crush tender relationship plants by being harsh and unforgiving.

5. Learn to say “thank you” a lot.

Everyone loves to be appreciated for what he or she has done instead of being taken for granted. You may be thrilled by the vibrant blossoms of encouragement that will result from taking time to say “thank you.”

6. Listen more than you talk.

In a game of tennis it would be very strange for one of the players to bounce the ball up and down on his or her side instead of hitting the ball back to the other player. The same could be said for the game of ping pong. These games teach a powerful lesson. If you are always talking and other people don’t have a chance to get a word in edgewise, you won’t be very popular for long.

7. Go out of your way to help others in practical ways.

If a friend is in the hospital, go visit him. If a neighbor is going through a difficult financial time, bring groceries over to help tide him or her through the crisis.

If you follow these simple but powerful suggestions for nurturing your relationships, you yourself will also reap benefits in the form of increased happiness, pep and vitality. That’s because our relationships are far more important to our wellbeing than how much money we make or how well we’re doing climbing the corporate ladder.

Why not take a personal inventory of your life today? Put these suggestions into practice and become more effective in cultivating your special relationships.

Happy gardening!

When I was potty training my two young boys, I discovered this method of potty training that made it an enjoyable, yet very effective way to potty train toddlers.

First, make sure your child is ready for potty training, shows interest, wants “big kids pants” etc. If they show no signs of readiness, it may be best to let them mature a bit more.

Make this a game, make it fun and you will not run into stubborn opposition (after all it is the child’s body). Go out and buy or find around the house items you don’t normally let your child play with. Some examples might be toys that can be used in water (3 or 4 things), like little plastic pitchers, balls, tiny cups, whatever, but make them SPECIAL. The only real rule to this game is these special “potty” toys can only be played with while the child is sitting on the potty! This is very important; no breaking this one rule, or it won’t work.

Once the child is sitting on the potty fill a large bowl or small bucket with lukewarm or tepid water, place the new “potty” toys in the bowl and set the bowl of water in front of the child. On the floor if the potty seat is low, or if it’s a potty seat that sits on top of the regular toilet, set the bowl of water on a TV tray or something that provides a step, in front of the child. When the child places his/her hands in the lukewarm water to play with the toys, if the child needs to physically go, they nearly instantly go potty (it’s almost an instinctive type of physical reaction), then cheer, cheer, cheer! Give lots of praise, and if you wish to give some type of a treat, go ahead.

Let them play as long as they want, as long as they sit on the potty. When they are done playing, put the toys away for next time. This is really great because it makes it fun for them so they cooperate, it totally ends all power struggles, and also no more waiting and waiting for them to go only to have them go potty as soon as the diaper goes back on. They also feel good because they have immediate success. Potty training no. 2 was more difficult I found, that just came with some time and patience and them learning in their own space and way, relax, it will happen.

Do you want to know how I get this idea? It’s kind of a funny thing, my husband used to be in the military and when he was young in boot camp they used to always play jokes on each other in the night by dipping the hand of someone who was sleeping, into a pan of lukewarm water, thus making the person wet the bed. It just seemed like a natural progression to use this trick for good use in the potty training area and it worked great!
